Special Power Cable

Special Power Cable

Details
Special power cables refer to cable systems used in specific, harsh, extreme or highly demanding industrial, military, aerospace and scientific research environments. Unlike standard commercial cables made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), special-purpose cables are highly customized in terms of material formulation, structural design and performance characteristics to withstand extreme temperatures, frequent bending, chemical corrosion or stringent fire and explosion protection requirements.

Core Categories and Engineering Applications

Special power cables are primarily categorized into the following four main families based on their core 'special properties':

High-Temperature and Fire-Resistant Specialized Cables

Mineral-insulated cables (MI cables): These utilize inorganic magnesium oxide powder as insulation and a copper tube as the sheath. These cables maintain uninterrupted power supply even in fire scenes approaching 1,000°C and are commonly used in lifeline applications such as fire pumps and emergency lighting. Fluoroplastic/Silicone Rubber Cables: These utilize PTFE (Teflon) or high-grade silicone rubber. They can operate continuously under extreme temperature ranges from –60°C to +250°C or even higher, and are widely used in steel metallurgy, substations and inside boilers.

Wear-Resistant and Highly Flexible Dynamic & Flexible Mechanical Cables (Pur Cable)

Featuring a polyurethane (PUR) outer sheath and ultra-fine, finely-stranded copper wires internally. Resistant to tensile stress and tearing, capable of withstanding millions of repetitive bending cycles when used with robotic arms or automated production lines. Reel-wound and flat cables: specifically designed for gantry cranes and container terminal cranes, offering exceptional axial tensile strength and resistance to torsion.

Green & Radiation-Resistant Cables Nuclear Power Station Cables (Class 1E)

Must possess extremely high resistance to environmental radiation (anti-ageing) and an exceptionally long design life of 40–60 years. Highly flame-retardant, eco-friendly, low-smoke, halogen-free (LSZH) cables: These emit zero acidic gases and produce ultra-low smoke in the event of a fire, and are commonly used in high-passenger-capacity environments such as airports, high-speed rail networks and the interiors of submarines.

Corrosion-Resistant and Marine-Grade Cables (Chemical & Marine Resistant) Termite- and Rodent-Resistant Cables

Incorporate special high-hardness physical barriers (such as stainless-steel tape armour) or chemical repellents within the outer sheath to prevent rodents from gnawing through the cables. Oil-resistant, acid- and alkali-resistant, and deep-sea diving cables: Used on offshore drilling platforms or in chemical and oil refineries, where they are subjected to long-term immersion in chemical media, mineral oils or salt-fogged seawater, without the insulation swelling or cracking.

Engineering Differences Between Special Power Cables and Standard Cables

Technical Parameter

Standard Power Cable (e.g., YJV/VV)

Special Power Cable (e.g., Special Flame-Retardant / High-Flexibility)

Operating Temperature Limit

Rated max. 70°C or 90°C

Typically, 150°C/200°C, even exceeding 1000°C (MI cable)

Bending Life (Dynamic)

For fixed installation only; frequent bending leads to conductor breakage

Specifically engineered for millions of dynamic reciprocating bending cycles

Outer Sheath Physical Properties

Standard PVC; poor abrasion resistance and oil resistance

PUR/fluoroplastic; tear-resistant, withstands strong acids/alkalis, oil- and chemical-impermeable

Unit Price & Capital Expenditure

Relatively low cost; suitable for large-scale infrastructure laying

Significantly higher cost (multiple times) due to complex materials and manufacturing processes
